Facebook tries adding reactions to Messenger chats

Facebook tries adding reactions to Messenger chats

Facebook's reactions are thriving in your News Feed, and it now looks like the company wants to spread them to Messenger, too. The social network has confirmed to TechCrunch that it's testing the ability to add reactions to individual messages, much as you would with stickers in Apple's iMessage system or Slack's team chats. The experiment has all the icons you'd expect from conventional Facebook posts (five emotions plus a thumbs-up), but also a thumbs-down -- this is the closest you may get to that mythical Facebook "dislike" button. This would help tally up votes for a place to eat, for example, or share your response if you're a little late to reply with text.

There's no guarantee that you'll see reactions any time soon. Facebook describes this as a "small test" and isn't committing to a launch any time soon, assuming it goes forward. However, it'd make sense to beef up both Messenger and Workplace, Facebook's Slack-alike.

NASA prevents probe's collision with Martian moon Phobos

  •  NASA prevents probe's collision with  Martian moon Phobos

  • NASA's MAVEN spacecraft and Phobos would have arrived at an intersection in their orbits within seven seconds of each other on March 6th. Phobos is the larger of the two Martian moons, and MAVEN would most likely crash into it if the space agency left it on its own. Thankfully, the mission's scientists have been keeping a close eye on all the celestial bodies that cross the spacecraft's path. They were able to predict the scenario in advance and were able to perform the spacecraft's first collision avoidance maneuver to prevent the disaster from happening.

  • MAVEN carried out a rocket motor burn on Tuesday to boost its velocity by around just a little bit less than one mile per hour. That's enough for the probe to miss the innermost Martian moon by two-and-a-half minutes. The Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution spacecraft left the planet in late 2013. It arrived in late 2014 and have been orbiting Mars ever since in an effort to determine why its atmosphere and water vanished over time.

  • Hacked robots could be used to kill people, poison pets and help thieves rob homes, experts reveal

  • Researchers have discovered a number of security vulnerabilities in existing robots, which they say can be used by criminals to cause serious harm to their owners.

  • IOActive tested robot operating systems and other software in order to identify nearly 50 flaws in robots from vendors including SoftBank Robotics, UBTECH Robotics, ROBOTIS, Universal Robots, Rethink Robotics, and Asratec Corp.

  • Insecure communications, authentication issues, weak cryptography, memory corruption and privacy problems were just some of the issues named by the firm's senior security consultant Lucas Apa.

  • The research paper says that criminals could exploit the flaws to gain control of robots in homes and workplaces, using them to spy on people and cause physical damage.

  • “Compromised robots could even hurt family members and pets with sudden, unexpected movements, since hacked robots can bypass safety protections that limit movements,” it says. “Hacked robots could start fires in a kitchen by tampering with electricity, or potentially poison family members and pets by mixing toxic substances in with food or drinks.

  • “Family members and pets could be in further peril if a hacked robot was able to grab and manipulate sharp objects.”

  • It adds that robots integrated with smart home automation systems could also assist burglars by deactivating alarms and locks. Even if they aren't integrated, however, hackers could still use them to issue instructions to voice assistants, such as Alexa and Siri.

  • “A hacked, inoperable robot could be a lost investment to its owner, as tools are not yet readily available to 'clean' malware from a hacked robot,” it adds. “Once a home robot is hacked, it's no longer the family's robot, it's essentially the attacker's.”

  • IOActive say it has alerted all of the vendors named above, and will only release specific details of the vulnerabilities once they've had enough time to fix them.

How to install the OpenVAS vulnerability scanner on Ubuntu 16.04

  • How to install the OpenVAS vulnerability scanner on Ubuntu 16.04

The Open Vulnerability Assessment System (OpenVAS) is a set of tools for vulnerability scanning and management. OpenVAS can scan systems for thousands of known vulnerabilities. It's incredibly powerful and should be considered a must have for anyone who serious about their network and system security.

SEE: Network Security Policy (Tech Pro Research)

I'll walk you through the process of installing this powerhouse security admin tool on Ubuntu 16.04. The process is a bit time consuming, but what you gain in the end is worth every second.

Note: OpenVAS is an outstanding way to test machines you own/service/administer for vulnerabilities. Do not use this tool on systems outside of your purview.

Installing OpenVAS

We'll be working entirely via the command line, so open a terminal window on your Ubuntu 16.04 server and get ready to type. The first thing you must do is update apt and then upgrade your system. Issue the following two commands:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get upgrade

Before continuing to the OpenVAS install, there is one package that must be installed. Issue the command:

sudo apt install software-properties-common

Once those commands have completed, the necessary apt repository must be installed. Issue the following at your terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mrazavi/openvas

When prompted to hit Enter, do so. The repository is set.

We update apt once again with the command:

sudo apt-get update

Finally, we install OpenVAS:

sudo apt-get install openvas

A number of dependencies will be picked up and installed during this process. During the installation, you will be asked to enable a redis database so OpenVAS can store necessary data. Tap Yes and hit Enter (Figure A).

Figure A

Enabling the redis database.

When that task completes, OpenVAS is installed, but it's not ready to be used--there are still a few steps to take.

Post-install

You need to install the sqlite3 package, which is used to store Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures data. To install sqlite3, issue the following command:

sudo apt-get install sqlite3

Now we need to sync the OpenVAS NVT feed. By doing this, the OpenVAS installation will have access to the most current vulnerabilities. The command to sync the NVT feed is:

sudo openvas-nvt-sync

The above command should be added as a weekly cron job (as the feed is updated weekly). To do this safely, we'll create a bash script, called openvas-update, with the following contents:

#!/bin/sh

temp=`tempfile`

openvas-nvt-sync 2>&1> $temp

if [ $? -ne 0 ]

then

cat $temp

fi

rm $temp

if [ -f /var/lib/run/openvasd.pid ]

then

pid=`cat /var/lib/run/openvasd.pid`

kill -1 $pid 2>/dev/null

fi

Give that file executable permissions with the command chmod u+x openvas-update and then move it to a suitable location, such as /usr/local/sbin. Now issue the command sudo crontab -e and add the following line:

0 0 * * SUN /usr/local/sbin/openvas-update

Save and close that file.

Next we need to synchronize Security Content Automation Protocol (SCAP) and Computer Emergency Readiness Team (CERT) vulnerability data. Do this with the following two commands:

sudo openvas-scapdata-sync

sudo openvas-certdata-sync

Both of the above commands will take a while, so either sit back and enjoy the show or head off and tackle another task.

When the two sync commands complete, the OpenVAS scanner and manager both need to be restarted with the following two commands:

sudo service openvas-scanner restart

sudo service openvas-manager restart

Finally, the OpenVAS database must be rebuilt so the OpenVAS manager can access the newly updated data. Issue the following command:

sudo openvasmd --rebuild --progress

Before you continue, the default admin password must be changed. To do this, issue the command (NEW_PASSWORD is the password you want to use for the admin user):

sudo openvasmd --user=admin --new-password=NEW_PASSWORD

OpenVAS is ready to be used. Point your browser to https://IP_OF_SERVER:9392 (IP_OF_SERVER is the actual IP address of your server hosting OpenVAS) and log in with the user admin and the new password you created above.

Now you can use the OpenVAS web-based interface to scan an IP address for vulnerabilities. Type in the IP address or hostname in the IP Address Or Hostname field and click Start Scan (Figure B).

Figure B

The OpenVAS dashboard is ready to serve.

Start scanning

With your new OpenVAS installation ready to go, you can scan all of the machines on your network to check for any known vulnerability. This should be considered a must for any system or network administrator.

It'll take some time to get OpenVAS up and running, but in the end you'll be far more aware of any issues on your servers and/or desktops. Better safe than sorry.

How to use the versatile fman file manager on a Mac

  • How to use the versatile fman file manager on a Mac

Fman offers a clean, dark interface and boasts dualpane operation and handy, time-saving shortcuts.

fman

I'm typically a fan of any tool, utility, or application that simplifies fulfilling professional responsibilities; the Mac command line, password managers, and Microsoft Outlook are three examples. So whenever a new option, such as the dual-pane fman file manager for Mac (and Windows and Linux) comes to my attention, I try to give the application a look.

SEE: 16 OS X tweaks for business power users (TechRepublic)

The program's immediate advantage is the presence of two panes--dragging-and-dropping files between directories is easier when you don't have to open a second window, tab, or program instance. Just navigate to the correct directories and move files as required.

The program's second advantage is keystroke-based shortcut navigation. Described as GoTo on Steroids, the program enables quickly navigating between directories using Command+P on Macs. Entering the keystroke combination prompts a pop-up menu presenting several common folder locations, as well as those previously accessed.

Most folders are easily found. Navigating to local directories is simple: just enter the path. Locating cloud-based folders can prove a little more challenging, if you're unfamiliar with the manner in which OS X maps those directories. Accessing the iCloud Drive, for example, requires entering ~/Library/Mobile Documents/com~apple~CloudDocs/ as the path.

Further navigation and actions are enabled by pressing single keys: F6 for moving, F5 for copying, Delete for going up, Command+V for pasting, and so on. Pressing Shift+Command+P prompts a pop-up menu in case quick reminders are required.

The program is straightforward and possesses a clean interface whose dark UI proves easier on older eyes, particularly in low-light environments. When copying or moving files using keystoke commands or a mouse or trackpad, a quick pop-up menu confirms whether you wish to complete the action, which helps prevent mistakes.

Evaluation programs can be downloaded for free. The program's developer stated in an email message that the application will likely be priced around $25 once it's released. That said, the developer indicates some 100 introductory licenses were made available March 1, 2017. Those quickly sold out, and I suspect more will be made available soon as various tweaks and updates are completed. You can obtain updates on the application and its code on the site's blog.

One aspect likely prompting particularly careful development is fman's support for plug-ins. The program supports quite a wide range, including for arrow key navigation, compression operations, and QuickLook functionality.

Conclusion

Previously I wrote about using Commander One, a potent Finder alternative, and fman is another option worth exploring. In the course of using fman for a week, both in Windows and on my Mac, I found the program intriguing and worthy of continued use. Often, upon completing trial experiences, I delete the software. I'll be leaving fman on both my Mac and Windows systems, though. It's earned its place.

Google Cloud launches VM instances with 64 virtual CPU cores

  • Google Cloud launches VM instances with 64 virtual CPU cores

  • Google today enhanced its Google Cloud Platform (GCP) public cloud infrastructure offering with new virtual machine (VM) instances that boast up to 64 virtual central processing unit (CPU) cores, effectively providing more computing power for applications. They're available now in beta for all users and projects out of Google's data center zones that run Intel's Haswell and Broadwell chips.

  • There are three available flavors in the Google Compute Engine (GCE): a standard instance called n1-standard-64, a high-memory instance called n1-highmem-64, and an instance with high CPU-to-memory ratio called n1-highcpu-64. They're all available from Google's web based Cloud Console and in the command-line interface (CLI) with the Google Cloud SDK.

  • Google has been taking many steps to become more competitive with other public clouds. The biggest one, Amazon Web Services (AWS), does offer machines with 64 vCPUs. There are even 128 vCPU machines available from AWS. Currently Microsoft Azure, the second biggest cloud, does not have machines with more than 32 vCPUs.

  • Google followed AWS and Azure and introduced a key management service in January.

  • People with free trials will need to ask for a quota increase in order to spin up one of the new instances — if you try to create one with a free trial, you'll receive an error saying you've reached a limit of 24 CPUs.

  • “We'll improve the way quotas work in the near future so that it will be possible to create a 32-core instance for new, free trial users, a Google spokesperson told VentureBeat in an email.

  • Google's prowess in getting big customers for its cloud was proven last month, when Snap, the newly publicly traded company behind Snapchat, revealed that it had a $2 billion contract with the Google Cloud.

Gmail v7.2 adds your accounts to app shortcuts

  • Gmail v7.2 adds your accounts to app shortcuts

A new version of Gmail started rolling out recently, but there were no obvious changes. However, Google just posted an updated changelog that reveals the addition of account links in the app shortcut menu. This could be really handy if you have multiple accounts.

According to Google, here's whats new in Gmail.

• (Android 7.1 & up) Long press on the app icon to quickly compose a message, select an account, or drag and pin a shortcut

• (Exchange only) View, create, or edit tasks in your Exchange account

Okay, there are a few things to unpack here. The exchange stuff, while new to the changelog, is not technically new to the app. This was added in v7.1, but Google is treating it like it's new this time around. Maybe no one noticed last time?

As for the app shortcuts (previously and more accurately known as launcher shortcuts), simply long-press and you get the usual compose shortcut followed by all the accounts you have in Gmail. You can launch any of them from this list, or long-press one to drag it out and make a new shortcut. Boom, one-tap access to specific accounts. You need to be on Android 7.1 for this to work.

The new version of Gmail should be live for everyone in the Play Store now. It's also on APK Mirror, if you're so inclined.

Google and Mozilla are right: AV firms do need to stop breaking HTTPS security

  • Several major security vendors have recently been accused of endangering web users by mishandling the inspection of encrypted traffic.

  • Image: Getty Images/iStockphoto

  • An advocate for the antivirus (AV) industry has warned security vendors to take heed of a call by Google, Mozilla and CloudFlare to back off inspecting encrypted traffic.

  • Security vendors need to clean up their acts on crypto if they're going to do traffic inspection, according to Martijn Grooten, editor of Virus Bulletin, an infosec publication for the AV industry by the AV industry.

  • In a blog entitled "Security products and HTTPS: let's do it better", he addresses recent criticisms of several major security vendors for endangering web users by mishandling Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and Transport Layer Security (TLS) traffic inspection.

  • The SSL/TLS protocols are responsible for creating a secure, encrypted HTTPS connection between user software, such as browsers, and servers.

  • However, to monitor for malware, many antivirus and enterprise middlebox products intercept encrypted traffic, decrypt the session to analyze its contents, and then create a new TLS connection to the website.

  • The problem is that many security vendors have implemented this feature badly, creating a less secure connection for users than say Chrome or Firefox offer.

  • Security researchers from Google, Firefox maker Mozilla, and CDN provider CloudFlare drew attention to this problem in dozens of products from major security firms. The worst products severely break HTTPS connections due to using weak ciphers or not validating certificates.

  • These issues could expose users to a man-in-the-middle (MITM) attack where the attacker impersonates a website while the user is under the impression they have a secure HTTPS connection.

  • The researchers urged vendors to stop TLS interception because these security products already have access to the local filesystem, browser memory, and content loaded over HTTPS.

  • While Grooten still largely defends TLS interception as way of protecting PCs from malware, he admits "there is no excuse not to implement crypto properly, especially given that cryptographic libraries are available that make this a relatively straightforward task".

  • However, in defense of vendors, he says people who oppose TLS inspection on the grounds that it breaks the end-to-end principle of HTTPS are missing a key point.

  • "A compromise in one area of security could (sometimes) lead to improved security elsewhere, and thus a net win," he writes.

  • He goes on to argue that MITM attacks, while not impossible, are largely theoretical, whereas security vendors may be more concerned about the more concrete threat from exploit kits and malware, the threats their products are designed to block on behalf of customers.

  • "It just isn't that easy for an attacker to get that privileged network position, especially not compared with the many other ways in which they can get the information they are after," Grooten writes.

  • "And this may be the main reason why there are quite a few security products that don't implement TLS properly: it doesn't really impact their customers, at least not the vast majority of them."

  • Nonetheless, for vendors, the paper by Google, Mozilla, and CloudFlare, should be a wake-up call to fix TLS in their products.

  • "If the mostly theoretical threat isn't a good enough reason, then let papers like the one mentioned here be the threat model you're missing. After all, they are a PR embarrassment and hurt not just the affected products, but the industry as a whole."
